The U.S. led views that Russia had not withdrawn any troops, but instead added as many as 7,000 troops to encircle Ukraine.
On the data front, Japan’s January exports came in far below expectations, with official data released Thursday showing a 9.6% year-on-year rise for that month. That was against expectations by economists for a 16.5% gain.
Elsewhere, Australian employment rose modestly by 12,900 in January as a surge in coronavirus cases put a big dent in hours worked, while the jobless rate remained at 4.2%, the lowest in 13 years, amid record-high vacancies.
Bond yields ease as minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting showed policymakers still leaning toward moving decisively to fight inflation.
